THE RECENT PROSECUTION. White) Bftid that after tha ca»9 he called Carter to one side and he faithfully promised tho inspector that 3iis would not again use electricity on .tho lion: "A day or two before the ewe came before the court Carter aßked tho inspector not to proeocuto, saying: "I will, give you my , word of honour that it frill never happen again right throughout New Zealand." Carter had told the .inspector that other inspectors of Societies for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals ihad found no fault with his treatment of the lion and that Christohurch waa "the first place at which he hid been brought up for cruelty. Mr White told Carter th*t he could go away with the impression that Christchurch was not so slow after all. Tho chairman. (Ml A. R. Moften) said that he had been astonished that tho magistrato did not take'mora notice of the matter. His own yiew was that Carter should have been convicted. The inspector said that Since the case dozens of people had approached him olid expressed tho opinion th&t Carter Should have been convicted , Mr L- Spiller remarked that probably the fact that Carter had been proceeded agamSt would act as ft warning in other towns.
