SPORTING.

Acceptances for the Napier Park Racing Club's Autumn Meeting are due to-day. Acceptances lor the Masterton Racing "Club's Autumn Meeting are due on Friday. It is reported that Mr J. H. Prosser has .sold his N*ssau—Fornuial filly. Lovesign, to an Australian buyer. As a three-year-old last season Lovesign showed that she possessed speed by winning four races up to a mile. She aJso paid four second dividends, and finished third once in her other fourteen essays. Her second to Battle Scene in the Great Easter Handicap at Eicearton was. perhaps, her best effort during the 1922-23 season. This year she has raced thirteen times for four wins and a dead-heat for first, two seconds, and one third. Her form in tho Summer Handicap at the recent fixture at Treutham, when she won easily from a good field, covering the mile in Imiu 37 2-osec, suggests etaying ability of high order, and she should soon give a return of a portion of the 2000 guineas Mr Prosser is said to have received for her.

The jockeys ridfng on the concluding dav ot the Thames Jockey Club's Annual Meeting last week wore black arm-bands as a mark of respect to the apprentice W. McGonagle, wno was trie victim of a drowning accident at Thames on the Sunday intervening between the racing days. The deceased had not done much race-riding, but showed much, promise in the lew outings ho had in public.

At the Opotiki Jockey Club's Annual Alerting List Thursday, the aged Good Miglit—Tigerinc gelding, Prowler, won tho double, the Opotiki Cup and Macdonald Jlemoipal Handicap. There were apparently few horses competing at the meeting, as J)icky also accounted for two races. Cuvier Light, Mangatoetoe, and Waioeka Jack each scored a win and finished second once, and Heather Queen, Faber, and French Park eacli finished in places twice during the afternoon. The New Zealand trainer, G. Price, who has done well since his arrival in Sydney, has (tho Sydney "Referee" states) bought J. Burton's stables in Cowpor street, and will take them over after Easier. This probably means that Mr Burton contemplates retiring from a calling ho has so honourably followed for many years. His first winner of note was Mr Thomas Lee's Javelin, who pulled off tho A.J.O. Derby in 1871. Since then Mr Burton has won many important races with such horses as Llama, Normanby, Dare Devil. Muciel, Stan more, Murillo, Vagabond, Hesperian, Mountain King, Belah, Lady Wallace, Tartan, and A\ estcourt. At present Mr Burton is training Cugo, Mulgrave, and Trice. A special meeting of the North Canterbury and Oxford Jockey Club was held on Friday, Mr H. C. *D van Asch presiding. The treasurer reported that the finances showed a credit balance of £665 14s 9d. Mr L. W. Harley was appointed secretary. Mr van Asch said he would be absent from New Zealand until the end of the year, and asked the club to grant him leave or accept his resignation. It was decided that the necessary leave be granted.
