AUCKLAND TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
(FBES3 ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) AUCKLAND, January 29. The provincial tennia championships were concluded to-day, in perfect weather and before a good attendance. A high standard of play was maintained. A feature of the day -was the defeat of the favourites in the semi-finals, notably E. L, Bartleet in tho Men's Singles. Results: MBN7S SINGLES. ' Semi-finals. E. "W. Griffiths beat E. L. Bartleet, 4-6, 8-6, G-S, 6-4, C-2. This match, wae commenced on Monday, play being, discontinued with the scoro two sets all. Bartleet appeared anxious, and the aboonoo of hia brilliant driving urns noticeable. Dr. Laureoson beat W. A. Fotheringham, 6-1, 8-6, 6-4, 6-2. Pinal. Dx. L<varenßon beat Griffiths, 7-5, 6-3, 6-0. The winner taiea the Hojrno Cup. • MEN'S DOUBLES. Semi-finala H. Brinsden and E. "Wl Griffiths beat Johns and Johna, 2r6, 6-1. 6-4, .9-7. Pinal. Bartleet and Bobson beat Brinsden and Griffiths, fr-4, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. LADIES' SINGLES'. Semi-finals. Wsa A. Howe ■ (WeJiington) beat Hra Hogben, 6-3, 6-3. Miss Marjory MacFarlano beat Miisa B. It. Knight, G-i» 6-3. Final. Miss MaaEarlone boat Mis 3 Howo, 6-2, 6-1. The 'winner overwhelmed her; opponent. LADIES' DOUBLES. Final. Mrs Marshall and Miss MacCoimick beat Mra Hogben and Mies B. ii, Knight, 6-3, 6-4. Good form was cilio'.vn by all the players, but Miss Knight Y{u;3 afEeeted _by previous games. The -volleying- generally waa the principal feature of tno match. Mrs Marshall "was very effective on tho backhimtl. < MIXED DOUBLES. Semi-finals. Mib Scott Watson and Brimxlen beat Miss B. Witherow and E. G„ Tallies, 6-4, 8-6. Misa Knight and V. K. Johna beat Misa Mturjoiy MacFarlane and; Bobson, 8-6, 6-3. Thio was ther finest match of the tournament, and a splendid exhibition* of combined doablea play. Mrs Knight's smashing 1 and volleying was of tho Mirlicst olasa. Bobson played up to hia best form. ' Final. Mrs Scott Watson and Brinsden beat Miss Knight and V. B. Johns, 9-7,, S5-Q, 6-2. The losers did not show form .equal to that in their, previouo match.
