The Mayor stated at Tuesday night's ■meeting of the Borough Oou'ncifthai Archdeacon Julius would hold a service in St.-Mary's Church on Sunday, I December 16th, in commemoration of the anniversary of the Canterbury proi vinee. He expressed the hope that as I many councillors as could do so would attend the. service. During some discussion at Tuesday I night's meeting of the Borough Council. Something would have to be done and the matter would lay in, the hands of the representatives as far as Levels was concerned. Swifts Swimming Club. The opening of the season for the Swifts Swimming Club took plaee on Tuesday evening with a 50 yards handicap. Results were as follows: — First heat: M. Waterhouse 1, JEaton 2. Second heat, F. Rasmussen 1, D. Lindsav 2. Third heat, E. Lowfield' 1, S. Earl 2.. Final, Waterhouse 1, Eaton. 2. Time, '62, 3-osec. Bowling Centre.. The South Canterbury Bowling Centre held a meeting on Tuesday evening at which were present: : Messrs G. Hadlee (chairman), J. Moves. J."'ft. Millar, C. E. Torlesse, It. Shiljito, L. Dewar, H. Keen, R. F. Proven, and F. B. Hawkey. The chairman stated that he had received eight badges from Mr Steans, president of the Christ-church Centre, for the winning skips of the team which won the representative match. The local skips had very much appreciated the donations of the badges, and when th G Christ-church team was leaving, Mr Steans had given him an extra badge to be given to Mr J. Moves, in recognition of the excellent game he had played in the representative match. The secretary stated that arrangements for the Christmas tournament were well in hand. To date 26 rinks had entered, teams coming from Invercargill to Christchurch,. while there were 47 pairs and 41 singles, A lengthy discussion then took place on the question of bowl-testing. The draw for the next challenge for the Bristol Cup resulted in the Timaru Club being drawn to play Ashburton for the trophy.' It was decided to play the match on December 15th if suitable to Ashburton, Timaru to play Kai Toa on Saturday next in a championship match instead of on December 15th.

The chairman referred to the representative match against Canterbury on Saturday last,, and said that he hoped next year South Canterbury would send up their strongest team. The Power Board wrote on the question of street, lighting,-stating that they would do the lighting of the town as from the time they took .over the borough plant for £99 per annum less than the present cost, the lamps _ to be kept burning from sunset to sunrise. The Power Board's offer was accepted. The South Canterbury.Employers' Association wrote regarding cleaning the streets" and footpaths, and minimising the dust nuisance. The question of piping was brought, up. One member said the prize-win-ners did not take their turn at playing for the dancers. Tl.cy usually left it to a few young follows. He suggested that the rule which provided that each competitor should take his turn should -be enforeca. This was agreed to. Officials were appointed for the coming meeting, and Una!, arrangements made. It was agreed that no stewards should be appointed in the dancing classes who had children competing. Infectious Diseases. During-the month of November comparatively few cases of infectious diseases were notified to tho District Health Officer "(Mr J. Menzies).
