CHESS.
N.Z. CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY. The tliirty-jthird. tournament to decide the chess championship of New Zealand is scheduled to ' open at Wellington on Boxing Day. The entry of Mr S. Crakanthorp, the distinguished New South "Wales champion, is naturally causing .more than ordinary interest to be taken in this contest. Accompanied by his wife, he is leaving Sydney on the 20th instant. As some of the 21 competitors cannot snare the time for a full-round contest it will presumably be necessary to resort to section play, in order, to shorten the tourney. It is claimed that this course would be better than the weeding out of the weaker competitors.
