The United States Coal Commission, which has b»en investigating the in du.itry since last year's strike, has issued .: preliminary report recommending thr.t in tho event of future strikes or susoenvion of tnining operations, the Goveinment should take over the operation of tlie mines and the transportation, distribution, and marketing of anthracite coal. The report favours Government regulation of coal mines, but is against Government ownership. Tlie Commission says. tho country's anthracite resources are limited. Onethird of the original supply has already been exhausted. The remainder is c'.nl.!-n!h:d by a few individuals, and is therefi re of special public interest. The report also recommends .Congress to fix a uniform standard weight lor anthracite and bituminous conks, and adds: 'The owners of the mines, place a reserve ol from eight to ten dollars per ton on anthracite coal in normal times, and during a time of stress the price may be anything." Representatives of the mine workers attack the report on tho ground it will deprive them of tho benerits of a strike when it is necessary to protect their interests.
