CANTERBURY PLACE NAMES.
TO THX «MTOBi OF "THE MESS." Sir,—ln reply to Canon' Nevill's enquiry on Canterbury place names, Kingsdown is part of a Block of iO,OOO acres of, downs south of Timaru, formerly owned by Mr Thos. King. Kimberley was named after the Earl of Kimberley, Secretary of State for the Colonies in two of Mr Gladstone's Administrations. Kerry Town is an Irish settlement near Temuka, colonised from County Kerry. Killinohy is named after Killinchy, in County, Down, Ireland. Leeston was named by Mr Smith, one of the pioneers of the district, after the hamlet of Leeston, near Weston-super-more, Somerset, at least, this is one explanation I have seen; but it may be named after the late Mr J. J. Lee, who erected the first hotel there in 1866, and carried on business for some years in the township. Normanby is named after the Marquis ofi Normanby, Governor of New Zealand in the seventies.—Yours, etc., T. M. CURNOW. St. Saviour's Vicarage, Lyttelton. j
