An event unique in the-history of the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand was celebrated at St. Joseph's Cathedral vesterday, when two priests were for-* inally consecrated to the hierachy. These wero Dr. Whyte, as Bishop of Iftinedin, and Dr. Liston, as CoadjutorBishop of Auckland. There was a brilliant array of church dignitaries, and fcfie Cathedral was thronged. The consecration was performed by Archbishop Redwood, of "Wellington (Metropolitan), assisted by Dr. Carroll, Bishop of Lismoro (New South Wales), and Dr. Cleary, Bishop of Auckland. Also sent xa the eanotnary were Dr. CShyea, j Coadjntor-Archbishop of Wellington, I Dr. Brodie, Bishop of Christchurch, and I other clergy. The occasional sermon - was preachod "by Archbishop O'Shea. The City Council propose to collect rates on the Qas Company's mains which reticulate the tuty. The Finance Committee reported' to the Council last night that a demand had been made upon the Ohristchurch '.: Gas Company for rates , amounting to £949 18s. Id in respect of the Company's.mains, but. the solicitors for the company had given notice that ■the company objected to tho mains being rated. With a view to deciding the question of -whether the mains were rateable, the Committee recommended ffio Council to test the , matter by instituting a friendly action against the <ompany for the recovery of the rates.
