. ; ft THE HON. J. A. TOLB, K.O. A Press Association telegram . froD Auckland records the death of the Hon. J. A. Tole, K. 0., Crown Prosecutor to Auckland. Iteath occurred suddenly; it was due to heart disease. Mr Tola■was born in Yorkshire, of Irish parente. He came to Auckland with his parent*, and was educated there and at Sydney University, at which he graduated B.A. in 1868 and LL.B. in 1870. He was admitted to the 2sew South Wales bar in 1871, and to the New Zealand bar in 1872. While practising his profession in Auckland, he took much interest in local affairs. In 1876 he was elected to tho House of Representatives as member for Eden, and sat until 1887. In the Stqut-Vogel Ministry of 188437 he was Minister of Justice, and he was responsible for the enactment of the First Offenders Probation Act—the first' Act of its kind in the British Empire. In 1893 he was appointed Crown Solicitor and Crown Prosecutor in Auckland, and in 1907 he was appointed a King's Counsel. For many years he was prominent in public life. His activities Included membership of the New Zealand University Senate. *
