6 RIOTING IN MADRAS. (By Cable —Press Association—Coprrisrht.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) DELHI, 10. The labour troubles at Madras culminated in serious rioting. Native employees who had been on strike for over a montlh attempted to rush the mills. The police fired* a volley, killing two and wounding 20. Military foxce3, with machine-guns, aro now patrolling the mill district. NEWCASTLE MINEKS , CLAIMS. ; SYDNEY, December 13. The Newcastlb coal minere are submitting fresh claims, including a sixhour dajr, a minimum weekly wngo of £6, a minimum daily wage of 255, a five-days' week, abolition of the contract system, a fortnight's holiday annually on full pay, abolition of the afternoon shift, and a voice _in tho executive control of the industry. Pending the granting of the claims an interim award is sought conceding 25 to 48 per cent. FEDERAL BASIC WAGE. MELBOURNE, December 13. The- Federal basic wage of £4 will involve an extra amount of £1,000.000 amongst tho public servants. Tto Secretary states t'liat single men on £IG2 will not receive the £4. Reports from the different States indicate disappointment among public servants at the Government's decision. A MARINE DISPUTE. (Received December 13th, 10.25 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 13. A mass meeting of the marine stewards and pantrymen rejected the steamship owners' offer and decided to cease work as s.oon as the vessels in which they are engaged reach their home ports". It is believed that the decision means the commencement of a far-reaching waterside dispute.
