CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS. The opening bouts in the Canterbury" Championships were decided last evening-, in the King Edward Barracks, before a moderate attendance. The evening's entertainment was marred by the long intervals between bouts, and in this connexion tho arrangements left a lot to bo desired. A number of entrants declined tlioir engagements, and in consequence tho evening's en turtainment had to bo considerably curtailed. Following were the results: — FEATHER-WEIGHT. Chisnall (Bst 12lb> boat Armstrong (Sst 111b). Chisnall had all the best of tho first two rounds, when tho referee stopped the bout. Watt (Dunediu) (Sst OJlb) deleated McDonald (Sst lllb). In this bout science was thrown to the winds, but both contestants jjbowed an inclination to mix things. Alter a whirlwind bout Watt was declared tho winner. •WELTER-WEIGHT. W. J. Long llOst -Jib) defeated S. Manard (lOst 4Jib). Long held an advantage throughout, and easily gaine'd the verdict. J."Dwyer (lOst 2lb) beat It. J. Farmer flGst 71b). The bout was a very merry one and during the first round Farmer was feeling the effects of tho pace. Ho made a good recovery, but Dwyer was always the winner. E. Morris (9st lCilb) defeated B. Guy (9st 131b). Morris was cautioned several times in tho first two rounds for holding, but always had the better of matters, the bout being stopped during the third round. LIGHT-WEIGHT. J. Hetrick (9st 10lb) beat R. Pyo (9st 91b). Tho referee stopped the bout in the first round, Hetrick hoiding a. big advantage. Mitchell, who was to liavo met Musson, was indisposed, and Musson won by default. MIDDLE-WEIGHT. W. Toms (lOst 9Jlb) beat L. Blumskev (list 21b). Toms was always a winner and knocked bin opponent out in the second round.
