THE LATE SIR JOHN DENNISTON.

SCOTTISH SOCIETY'S TRIBUTE. At a well attended ingleside by the Scottish Society last evening Chief MacOillivray paid a tribute to the lato Sir John Dcnniston, in which ho Baid:—"l think that I should be wonting in respect wero I not to refer to the passing away of our much esteemed citizen and friend, Sir John Denniston. Tho Dominion as a whole, and tho pro/inoe of Canterbury in particular, has much reason to lament his deceaso. He was truly a proud man who claimed the honour of hist friendship, possessing as he did the characteristics that define all that was conscientious, noble % God-fearing, and lovable. His love tor his country was intense, and to watch him as he listened in wrapt attention to tho songs and music of his native land, wns a treat indeed, and zho loss to the kindred socioty with which he was eo closely associated, will bo keenly felt. Our genuine sympathy goes out to Lady Denniston and family in their .hour of sorrow." Afterwards tho society's piper, Mr Georgo McAlister, played the lament, "Lochaber No More," while the audience stood with bowed heads and foldod arms. Sympathetic reference to the death of Sir John Denniston was made in the Te Kuito Magistrate's Court yesterday by Mr G. P. Finlay and Mr J. D. Vernon, solicitors, and Mr E. W. Burton, S.M.
