PREVENTION OF CRUELTY TO ANIMALS.

The Society for tho Prevention of Cruelty to Animals met last night, Mr J. O. Jameson presiding. The secretary, Mr C. G. McKcJlar, reported that he had been passed for military service, and would be going into camp shortly. On the motion of Mr J. Spiller, it was agreed to grant Mr McKellar leave of absence for the time being, further arrangements to be made later if necessary. It was reported that Mr G. T. Bullock would act as secretary temporarily. Tho inspector, Mr D. J. White, submitted a lengthy report, in which he detailed the warnings he had administered during the month. With, reference io his visit to the North Canterbury Farmers' Co-operative Freezing Company's works, the inspector reported that the works manager informed him that it was intended to do away with, pithing, [ and to substitute the 7lb hammer. Mr J. H. Parker . reforred to tho experience of the manager of the freezing works at Ngahauranga, near Wellington, who had written to Mr Parker that he was more than satisfied with the method of killing with the 7±u hammer, and that if ho had his way he would destroy every pither. Amongst the oases reported by the inspector was that of a h'ors© suffering from colic on a vacant scction at the corner of Caehel street and Cambridge terrace. Mr "White waa out of town on the occasion, and expert advice hod been to kill the animal; the treatment given by the inspector relieved the animal's pain in ten minutes. Mr Spiller, referring to this case, eaid that the animal suffered great agony, and in its pain rubbed the flesh off part of its head. Mr Spiller complained that the men engaged at the military stables clow by had not endeavoured to relieve the an| mal's sufferings. Tho inspector was complimented on his exhaustive report.
