BOROUGH COUNCILS.
AKAROA. The Akaroa Borough Council met on "Wednesday. Present —The iftxyor (Jlr Geo. Armstrong), and Crs. Fyfe, Kerridge, Davis, ilacj farlane, Leote, Stewart,, and Lewitt. ■ The Xorth Canterbury Hospital and CharitI able Aid Board wrote stating that tho I borough's contribution this year was £98 2s 3d. It was decided to record the Council's 6trong protest against the ever-increasing' annual levy on public bodies. The Akaroa County Council wrote, notify--1 in? that a conference of representatives of 1 all public bodiee on tho Peninsula would bo held at Duvauchelle, to consider the questions of wages and labour as affecting tho local bodies. The Mayor was appointed to represent tho borough. Tho matter of tree-planting in the borough, in anticipation of an early Arbor Day, was, on the motion of Cr. Munro, referred to tho Reserves Committee for a report.
Surgeon Graeme-Anderson, R.X., stated at the British Medical Society in Maxch that an aviator's life consisted of spells of idleness punctuated with moments of intense fear. Most men smoked a great deal, and there were a few teetotallers. He had seen one man under the influence of drink do some wonderful "stunts," but his passenger was violently sick. "Nips"* in the air were not desirable, as the action of alcohol was intensified in the higher air.
