FOOD FOR PRISONERS OF WAR.
SCHEME FOR THEIR RELIEF.
Ample proof has been received by \he Central Prisoners of War Committee of tho safe arrival of a large percentage of the food parcels in the shape of postcards of acknowledgment sent by the captured men themselves, and the news given by the "many hundreds of dis- ( nbled prisoners who have been ox- * changed. In tho early days of the war, v, before there was a properly coordinated scheme for the relief of prisoners, somo received parcels but other's nono, or only the remains of parcels I which had already been subjected to much pilfering at the hands of the . .German guards. Many prisoners' whoso > relatives were too poor to provide funds received no food from England at all. t Now, under the present scheme, every u prisoner, be he soldier, sailor, civilian, <■ or member of tho Mercantile Marine, receives .enough food to keep him alive ; . from ( the' organisation in England, which, we, are told, is in dire need of ■" funds. , Tho censorship of prisoners' letters is J , very slricj, and nothing in tho nature i l °f' criticism.: is ever allowed to oomo ■ ' through, but exchanged invalid or disabled men tell many tales of the horrors „ they \have passed through, and of tho , insufficiency of food and its loathsome nature. .They speak emphatically of tho'.urgent need of continuing to send , food -parcels. . ' ■ Tho assurance of the German Government has now been given that all par,P a , under the supervision! of N R«d Cross authorities and bearing 1 guarantee of-.the Red Cross label ' ii fr ? m censorship and ; \ delivered. In fact, it might ,bo said thai; tho Germans intend that ■ w6 shall keep our own men who are in < * ' wiejp hands from starvation. l v - •*- ; - * i
