BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho Lyttelton Borough Council met last evening. Present—The Mavor (Mr W. T. Lester), Crs. C. E. J. T. Norton, F. G. Norton, T. Hempstalk, J. Gowcr, M. J. stiller, J. R. AVebb, J. 3£. Collins A letter was received from tho Prime Minister's office stating that a resolution passed by tho Lyttelton Borough Ccruncil that all purebred Germans be interned would bo forwarded to the Minister of Defenco for consideration.

Owing to the inconvenience and expense of supervising und carrying out the maintenance of the Purau road, from the Lyitelton side of the harbour, and as the Mount Herbert County CouncU is interested in the road, and could keep it in repair more conveniently, the Works Committee recommended that the County be requested to take over the maintenance of that portion of the Purau road adjoining the Diamond Harbour Estate, and that tho liyttelton Council contribute a sum of £5 per annum towards the cost of maintenance, the arrangement to be terminable by three months' notico on either side.—Adopted. The Estates Committee recommended that the rent of the bowling green 6ite be reduced from April 10th, 1918, to £20 per annum for the period of the war, and for twelve months after the war, the rates and water charges to remain os at present.—Adopted. Tho Mayor remarked that it was with much regret that the Council would be losing the valuable assistance of Cr, C. H. Agar, who had been obliged to resign owing to the fuct that a firm of which he was a member was conducting a business transaction with the Council. A resolution was carried expressing regret that Councillor Agar had been compelled to resign. Tho borough engineer's report showed that good progress was being mad© with the new diamond drill on the boro at Diamond Harbour for providing a water Bupply for the settlenient. Tho total depth of tn© bor© wa® now 452 feet, of which about 40 feet had been sunk through hard rock by tho new drill.
