Nosbit-. ilr D. Williams, third officer of tho Kokiri, has joined the Mararoa in a similar capacity. SHIPBUILDING. RAPID PROGRESS IN AMERICA. The following wireless message was received in Melbourne from Honolulu a few days ago:— San Francißco. —Mr Leslie Comyn, whoso shipyards built the first concrete ship, the Faith, has returned from Washington to ha present at the Faith's trial trip on Saturday, and to confer with the Government officials in the planning of a new concrete ship plant. This plant of several for. which Congress is considering a 50,C00,000d01. appropriation.' Mr Cbmyn's firm is ready to build four more stone ships as large as the Faith.
The first keel of the ten steel ships of 95C0 tons each was laid in a new Pacific Coast yard of 247 acres, which* has been constructed since January 6th. This is declared to bo a record for a plant of such size.
The ship riveiers at the Pacific yards have been aroused by the championship speed claim by an Atlantic Coast gang, which drove 2805 rivets an hour, earning 70 'dollars and a bonus. A great national contest for riveting honours has been started in Bcores of shipyards by more than. 2COO gangs. The Shipping Board has authorised contracts for 200 additional wood chips of about 4500 tons cach; also 25 large eea-going tugs. The completed, building, or planned wooden ships now number SEO.
The Treasury Department is considering the reduction of the Government marine vrar zone insurance to 2 per cent, from the present 8 per cent., owing to the diminished submarine peril.
