CRANKS.

TO THE EDITOR OF "THE PRESS."

Sir, —Your correspondent "J." haß opened, up a subject that is worthy 01 more serious consideration than he appears to have given it/ He-has come to the conclusion that the fact we have so many cranks in Christchurch is due to tne city being perfectly Hat. I think that so far he .is perfectly right. When one comes to think of it what a restricted physical vision tho people have, and in time it must also affect their mental outlook. Take the crowd that used to collect m Cathedral square on Sundays and listen to narrow-minded harangues that just suited the narrow outlook of the hearers. These people do not know what it is to go out into the open and on to the hills and see beyond themselves. Hence when they discuss matters among themselves, or listen to. those who know they have a.. gullible audience, their judgment is naturally warped and their conclusions erroneous. Thus wo have a class of people with a poor outlook, who are mors or less cranks, and among whom cranks of a more crafty kind wield considerable influence. Yours, .etc., K.
