The executive <jf the Red Cross met yesterday afternoon, Mr Arthur IS. G. Rhodes presiding over a largo attendance.

Arising out of a minute of a previous mooting on the subject, the chairman said that he fouutl that no matter how desirous they might be to send venison from the Ilakaia herd to military hospitals, they could not do so, as it would bo impossible to get the venison from the Rakaia to the freezing works. The Financo Committee reported on the resignation of tbo chairman. Mr J. A. Flesher said that the committee had exerted every effort to ensure a continuance of Mr Rhodes's connexion with tho organisation, but, unfortunately, Mr llhoaes's doctor's orders were strong, and the committee had been unable to overcome the difficulties. Jt would have been nice if tbey could have retained Mr llhodes's name as vice-president, but the doctor insisted that he must not toko up even a position of that kind. It was with deepest regret, in which he felt sure all joined, that he moved the adoption of the committee's report. Ever since the beginning of the committee's work, Mr Rhodes had rendered herculean effort in connexion with its noblo objects. Mr Rhodes had been the foundation of their work, and round him their operations had revolved. Mr M. J. Grcsson seconded, and said that all recognised the enormous amount of work done by tho chairman. l>r. Mickle expressed the hope that, the rest Mr Rhodes would bavo would result in restoring him; to health. The motion was agreed to, and. on the motion of Mr Flesher. seconded by Mr H. L. Bowker, jnnr., it was unanimously .resolved: "That this executive desires to place on record its appreciation of the valuable, sclf-sacrificing services rendered by Sir A. E. G. Rhodes as chairman of the Canterbury Executive of tho Rod Cross organisation from its inception to tho present time, and regrets exceedingly tho reasons which compel him to give up that position at tho present juncture." Tho chairman, in acknowledging tho resolntion, said that ho had done the work because he had wanted to do it, and ho had been greatly aided by the help ho had received throughout the district—practically everybody had helped.

Mr J. A Flesher was elected chairman, and Mr M. J. Gresson vice-chair-man. Mr _C. J. Ronaldson, manager of the National Bank, was elected honorary treasurer. Mr J. M. Tripp was elected a member of the executive. Mr Rhodes's name was added to tho Finance Committee. Mr Flesher was appointed tho Canterbury representative on the New Zealand Executive of the Red . Cross. Tho chairman referred to the need for empty cases by the women's branch. Mrs Wigram said that although they had almost reached bedrock, she was i glad to report that that day many cases had been received, and more had been promised. The secretary of the New Zealand Red Cross Society (Colonel W. H. Sefton Moorhouse) wrote that Sir James Allen, Minister of Defence, had issued an authority pursuant to powers conferred upon him by an Order-m-Coun-cil made at tho Court, Buckingham Palhce, dated August 12th, 1911, to tho New Zealand branch of the Red Cross Society, and the Order of St. John to use tho emblem of the "Red Cross."

Tho chairman suggested that Mr Flos her, the new chairman, when fie attended the meeting of the New Zealand Executive this week, might suggest that, if possible, tho matter should be carried further, and power obtained forbidding tho use of the "Red Cross" emblem by any other society. The secretary (Mr C. J. Treleaven) brought up tho question (mentioned to him by Mr H. M. Reevesy as to the conveyanec to the hospital of soldiers who -were out-patients, and who lived at a distance, and could not bo conveyed by tram. A sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Flesher, Reeves, Tripp and Hallenstein was set up to go into the matter. . I
