The engagement is announced of Miss Dorothy Rochfort Snow, youngest daughter of Colonel Snow, to Mr A. T. Clement Sellars, of Christchurch. Mrs Elder and her family (Kokerangu) are ,in Christchurch. They are staying at the Federal. Mr and Mrs D. H. McLean (Invercargill) returned homo yosterday Mr and Mrs C. J. Miller (To Kuiti) are staying at tEo Hydro in Timaru. Miss Ruth Nelson, who has been visiting Mrs It. Kitto, Harakeke street, has returned to Hawke's Bay. Mr Neville Mayman, who has boon touring New Zealand on behalf of the New South Wales Government, and has been studying the Dominion methods of saving infant life, says that he has been greatly impressed with the St. Helens Hospitals, not only as obstetric hospitals, but as most valuable training schools for midwivos. The Government, he thinks, is to be congratulated on tho policy of establishing hospitals of this description, which cannot fail to bo of immense servico in the reduction of infant mortality. Sir Mayman ;s loud in his praise of tho New Zealand Infant Life Protection Act.

Mrs Joseph Clark, a very old and much respected resident of Wellington, died on Tuesday at the liorao of ono of her daughters (Mrs W. J. Hoverd, Regent street, Wellington South). The deceased ladv, who was a native of London, and 74 years of ago, came out to Wellington with her' parents in tho Oliver Lang about 60 years ago, and had lived thoro ever since.. She was married in the Anglican Church, in Sydney street, and was tho mother of 13 children, 11 of whom (six sons and fire daughters) are still Jiving. . The eldest eon is Mr Thomas Clark, of Messrs McLeod, Weir, and Hopkirk's staff, and another son is Mr Herbert Clark, plumber, of Wellington, whose youngest brother is now in camp. Mrs J. A. Smith, of Hataitai, is the eldest daughter. Mr Joseph Clark is still residing in Wellington. A DANCE,

I A pleasant little dancc in aid of til© Returned Soldiers' Association took place in the Art Gallery last night. The organising committee comprised Misses Robbins, Thompson, ,Clark, and Robinson, Messrs Gunn, Gillies, McHarg, and Key, who saw lo it that everyone had an enjoyable evening. The decorations were very artistic, being carried out in subdued tints and autumn leaves. From the ceiling in tho hall hung big baskets of tawny chrysanthemums, intermingled with autumn foliago and berries, whilo -streamers in tones of green and gold were carried from corner to corner of tho room. In the I supper-room the samo floral scheme provailed, the tables having vases of chrysanthemums and berries. The chaperones were Mesdames L. M. Knight and L. Spragge. Among tho dancers wero:— Misses F. McDonold, Tankard, Robbins, E. Mazey, Freda Mazey, Richards, K.' Asquith, Ruby Withell, Thompson, Clark, AY. Withell, O. Dennis, Robinson, Stevens, Marsack, Graham, Bonnie Young, and Thompson, and Messrs Ashby, Denton, Key, Moore (2), Gunn, Gillies, Welch, Hutchinson,Stevens, McHarg, and others.
