BOARD OF INDUSTRIES.

MEETING 'OF EXECUTIVE

A meeting of the Board of Industries was held on Tuesday, the president (Mr J. A. Frostick) presiding over a good attendance of members. The president welcomed delegates from the Philosophical Institute —Mr L. Birks, Dr. Farr, svnd Dr. Hilgendorf—and expressed the opinion that there was considerable scope for the greater application of science to industry.

In replying on behalf of the delegates, 31 r Birlcs said he thought that the present time furnished a particularly appropriate opportunity for the application of science to industry, with, a view to increasing output, particularly as the average manufacturer, being engrossed with production, did not get an opportunity of studying his business from a scientific standpoint. As showing the benefit of scientific investigation, he instanced the recently-established industry for the utilising of petrol and other tins, with a view to saving the tin and other products contained in them. Another result was tho recovery of coal-tar products, which was very likely to become an important local industry. Dr. 'Hilgendorf emphasised the previous speaker's remarks, quoting specific figures proving the benefits of scientific methods as applied to some branches of primary industry. X>r. Fan* also spoke on similar lines to the previous speakers. It was ultimately resolved that the next public meeting be held in February, Mr L. Birks, Drs. Farr and Hilgendorf, together with the president, being appointed a. specif*] conimittee_ to arrange for speakers, thc_ subject being "The Application of Science to 2sew Zealand Industries.'' In view of the holiday season, it was resolved that tho next Board meeting bo held on the second Tuesday in February.
