Stan sell, of Lyall Bay (Wellington). the veteran bowler, liaa -presented two challenge shields—one to tho Timam Bowling Club a.nd tho other to the Manawatu Bowling Centre —in memory of Major Lionel Brougli Staneell, his son, who was killed in action in Franco. The shields axe to bo played for continuously, «>acli rink contesting them to pay half a crown each player, the proceeds tlm« derived to be devoted to tho New Zealand Soldiers' Fund. The presentation of the Shield to. the Timaru Club is particularly appropriate, for the late Major Stansell was "bora in Timaru, ond -was chkrf clerk of the railways at Timaru when ho enlisted. As for the other Shield, Mr J. R. Stansell is a life member of the Shannon Club, which is affiliated to the Manawatu Centre. They are handsome silver shields, the engraving representing the landing of Captain Cook at Ljull Bay. RAKAIA CLUB. The Rakaia, Bowling Club opened their green for the season on Saturday afternoon in. glorious weather. Mrs J. Penny, the president's wife, threw up the "kitty," and Mrs T. Blackley, the vice-president's wife, bowled the first ball, and the green was officially doclared open. Thero were three carloads of visitors from Methven and one car from Ash-burton. At the conclusion of tho games, Mr Galbraith, president of the Ashburton Club, thanked the Rakaia bowlers for tho good time the visitors had had. Ho congratulated Rakaia on the fine condition of the green. Ho hdd not played on so keen a ground since Methven gave the Ashburton players such a beating at Methven a year ago. He hopod the Rakaia players would soon return the visit. Mr J. Stewart, president of the Methven Club,, expressed the thanks of the Methven players, but said he had a bone to pick with Rakaia. Methven had an opening day a short time ago and no visitors came from Raknia. However, ho was sure that would bo soon rectified, and he extended to Rakaia a hearty invitation to visit their green. Mr J, Penny ©aid he had received apologies for absence which were quite unavoidable, from the Leeston and Dunsandol Clubs. He promised the visitors to send good stiff teams to give them a fight on their own grounds, and thanked them for their attendance.
