MONTHLY MEETING. The Lytfeßon Harbour Board met yest relay.- Present—Mr M. J. Miller (chairman), Hon. E. Moore. Dr. Thacker, M.P.,' and Messrs J. J. Graham, Geo. Scott,-C. Allison. F. Horrell, J. St-orrey, E. M. Speirs, T. D. Bong, and H. F. Nicoll. Tho Harbour Improvement • Committee reported (inter alia) having approved of reconsidering the proposed slip and trolleyway for o-tun boats., in the event of the boat-building .site being leased. The Board was recommended to wait formal application for permission to carry out the widening of Sumner road at Monek's Bay before taking any -action in connexion with the Christehurch Boat Club's protest. The extra freight on the 50-ton derrick cranc was reeoinmended to be paid l>y the Hoard, the amount being £3SO l<3s Of!. No ncrion was taken with regard to tlio Wairnakariri Harbour extension. With reference to the proposed "\Yaimakariri Harbour extension. Dr. 'i hack<v said he thought that the Board should take some notice of what was being done at Kaianoi, and decide what attitude the Board should take up. A brief discussion on the matter followed. and it was decided that the Lytfolfcon Harbour Board could not very well interfere or justly comment on the Wairnakariri Harbour Board's action. Several■ hoped that, the Kaiapoi people's progressive ideas would be brought to a successful conclusion. The Secretary of Marine wrote advising that the Christehurch Tramway Board had applied for permission to fill in a small portion of the foreshore on the Sumner road, and forwarding copy of, letters received from Dr. Ohetsou and the C'hristchurch Sailing Club objecting to the work. A report, from the engineer was mad on tho inattor, in which he expros-sed tho opinion that sailing would not be interfered with. The application of the Tramway Board was granted. Correspondent--,; from the Sumner Borough Council.in regard to the transfer of foreshore properties was approved. In "answer to a letter from the secretary of the Harbours' Association it was decided that it was not necessary to hold a conference this year, but that some important remits —especially the question of rates on freight-carrying transports —should he brought before the Executive. ft was decided to make a special grant of £100 to the .British and Foreign Sailore' Society in aid of the Seamen's Institute. A letter was received from the manager of the Union Steam Ship Company referring to the accident to a man who was struck oil tlio head by a heaving line from the ferry steamer, and submitting that it was the duty oi the Board to keep the .wharves elear v.hfri steamers were arriving or departing. The letter stated that something should be done to keep the. gangways -of passenger steamers clear of tho fencral public, and referred to the great risk of accident through shunting of mail .and baggage vans. The matter was referred to tlio Harbour Committee. It was docidcd to renew the lease of site and shod on No. o jetty to tho Union Steam Ship Company. I The matter of using the Gladstone ' Pier as a berth for ferry steamers was considered, in connexion with reports of marine experts, which reports were almost wholly unfavourable. The correspondence was received, and it was decided •to continue the trial of. the wharf, which had already been arranged lor. The general manager of the railways stated that his Department would afford all facilities for making the trial. A lettdr from Captain Ault, of tho Carnegie thanking the. Board for tho facilities granted to him free of charge, v/ais received. Tho matter of the responsibility for some railway tarpaulins damaged by fire was referred to the . j>_ Eolicitor.
