MOTOR DANGERS.

TO THE IvDITOP. OF "THE I'RESS." Sir, —I notice a correspondent, signing himself ''Motorist," replies to my letter, in wliich I pointed out the dangers i of Papanui road as a result of the un- j necessarily fast driving of motor ve- 1 hides. "Motorist" says in effect accidents are ail tho fault of those knocked down. Some people exercise more "''caution than others, no doubt, but take Holly road, where Nurse Rankin was knocked into unconsciousness. Passengers alight j from the tram on the west side, the j tram moves on, and those who have to ! walk across the road east. But a "road hog" is coming down the road, and rushes by tho tram at the rate of 30 to 40 miles an hour —what chance has a passenger got, especially if he or she happens to be advanced in years? "Mot-* orist," I notice, is a professional plan. His references to the Bank of New .Zealaiid corner and main streets have no bearing on my remarks of the dangers of Papanui road, where more than one professional man continually offends most seriously. "Motorist" says my idea is evidently to block traffic. Certainly, yes, if it will save even one life. But any block in the traffic on Papanui road caused by making the inhuman "road hogs" stop from knocking over passengers alighting from tramcars.i or those who have just alighted, would be worth while — at least to those whose lives are in danger. Ido not know Nurse Rankin, and was not a witness of her accident, but I do hope the authorities will thoroughly investigate the whole business of this, and tho tram accident earlier in the day. The authorities should-have officers' in plain clothes patrolling ' Papanui road for some time —and they should be instructed, to be especially alert at tram stopping-places. As a result, a professional man or two', and others, might bo convinced that pedestrians who use tramenrs are entitled to consideration. —Yours, etc., PAPANUI RESIDENT. January 13th.
