TRAFALGAR DAY.

CITY COUNCIL OBJECTS TO CELEBRATION. • The City Council last night adopted a formal resolution objecting to the celebration of Trafalgar Day during the war. The matter aroso by reason of a letter from the local Navy League, which stated that the Cathedral Chapter had given permission for several Venetian masts to be erected in the Cathedral grounds along the stone fenco on the western side in order that Nelson's last signal might be flown on Trafalgar Day, also that the various wreaths presented in memory of those who fell at the Battle of Trafalgar might bo displayed.. The writer enquired if the Council would grant tho loan of, say, lour Venetian masts and the services of two or more of the .Council's employees to erect tho masts, and afterwards remove them, the local Branch of the Leaguo to pay tho cost of tho necessary labour. The Mayor said the battle proposed to be celebrated was one hetween England and France, and as Franco was now our loyal ally the question appeared to him to be rather a delicate one, for he did not know that it would be altogether proper to celebrate tho day seeing the close relationship now existing between the two nations. The matter might be referred to the By-laws Committee with power to act. Cr. McCullough said ho thought wo could well forego tho celebration of Trafalgar Day, at all events during the period of tho war. He moved: "The City Council deem it inadvisable to celebrate Trafalgar Day during the duration of tho war." The motion was seconded by Cr. Herbert, supported bv Cr. Burgoyne, and carried unanimously.
