A FATAL MISTAKE.

PECULIAR DROWNING ACCIDENT. (rsxas ASSOCIATION* TKT.ZORAM.) AUCKLAND, September 27. Thomas Howarth, a waterside worker agod 39, was drowned in tho harbour lon Saturday afternoon, and a companion. Robert Alan McMillan, was severely burned through a fire on a launch. Edward Brown, the owner of the launch, states that while anchored off Chelsea he saw the stem of tho vessel in flames. He endeavoured to subdue them, but Imforo he succeeded, Jbe heard someone say; "Tom Howarth is overboard." Ho reversed his engine and steered to where Howarth was seen struggling in the water. Motherwell, one of the party, jumped overboard, and seiaal Howarth and endeavoured to get him to tho launch, but both sank. Motherwell alone rose to the surface, and was pulled on board the launch, much exhausted. The launch cruised about till all hope of recovering Howarth had to be abandoned. Howarth was a married man with a wifo and two children, who reside ip England. The fire on the launch was caused by Howarth having filled a kettle from a tin of benzine, believing it to be water. While.he was standing near the fire with the kettle in ius hands, the benzine flared into his face, jumped overboard to sare himself from burning.
