The Lyttelton Borough Council met last night. Present,-. Mr \V Uadnliffo (Mayor), and Crs. AY. AY. for, .1 T. Norton, W. T. Foster. M. .1* Miller, F. J. Page, .3. R. AA'ebb. T Homnstalk, 11. A. fthind, and l_. ll'. Isaacs. The .Mayor was appointed delegate to the Patriotic Fund Conference to be held next Friday. The Works Committee reported that as it would be inadvisable to metal Randolph terrace until certain regrading was done, and retaining walls constructed, the work should be carried out at a later date. Tn connexion with the proposal to acquire strips of land from owners on Hawkhurst road for the purpose of improving the road line, the committeo recommended that the holders of the property* be asked to make a transfer to the Council. —Adopted.' The recommendations of the Fire Prevention Committee, that the balance of the present year's fire prevention grant, amounting to £7">, should be paid over to the local brigado to meet liabilities, was adopted. The Finance Committer reported having considered the question of increasing tho wages of the corporation workmen by one penny per hour, and that a* the estimates had already been passed for the current year, thoy had no recommendation to make. Adopted. Tho engineer's report stated that boring operations for water at Diamond Harbour had been carried to a cf 2.12 ft. A test was made of the simply at 227 ft. it beino- found to be 1800 gallons per hour. With proper pumping appliances it. was considered that the supply would be increased to 3000 gallons per hour. The quality of the water was also a r*reat improvement on the {-amnio that had been analysed.— Adopted. The financial statement, .showed the district fund account, to havo a debit balance of £'">4 Os "d, and the temporary loans account a debit balance of £12,721 lis 7d.
