SALE AT PANAMA EXPOSITION

Less thati a fortnight ago the Department of Agriculture. Industries, and Commerce published a report which it had received on a shipment of fruit sent to San Francisco in February last for display at the Panama Pacific Exposition. The results proved anything but encouraging, a good deal of the fruit having arrived at San Francisco* in an unsatisfactory condition. A cable message has since been received by the Department from the Nov.* Zealand Commissioner to the Exposition in regard to a further shipment which was despatched by the Alarama on April Ist. The consignment consisted of 63 cases which had been contributed by various fruitgrowers' associations throughout the Dominion. Out of this number, six cases arrived in a condition unsuitable for marketing. The remaining 57 cases were offered for sale by auction, and tho gross pro«*cds totalled 110 dollars. AA'inter Nelis pears had the honour of capturing tho highest price of 3.75 dollars per case, which is equivalent to about los 7d. AA'inter Colo pears netted 3 dollars per case, nnd "Jonathan apples 2 dollars.. The Commissioner adds in his cable message that these varieties. of fruit are tho most suitable for tho Californian market. '
