COLONIAL SUGAR* COMPANY'S ALLEGATIONS.
May 2Gth, 10 p.m.) SYDNEJT. May 26. Ia a letter published in the Press to-di*-";, Mr E. AY. Knox, general manager of tho Colonial Sugar Company, says:—"ln reference to the threatened sugar._tortage, it will be of interest to the public to know that the authorities are attempting to stop us from obtaining supplies from Java by preventing the despatch of cablegrams thither. "On the 20th inst. we received an offer of sugar, and on the same date' we replied accepting as far as the sugar available in July was concerned. AYe again cabled for a reply, but, as we received no answer, we can only assume it w.13 also held back." The letter concludes: —"It will be interesting io know if the object was to bring about tho shortage we wished to prevent." Questioned in the House. Mr Hughes (Attorney-General) said it was not trno that the Govrrnment had refused to allow Mr Knox, xo get supplies of sugar from Java.
