In oonne"fdon with the threatened sugar shortage, a special "Gazette," under tho AVar Precautions Act, has been issued, giving the widest possible powers to officers of tho Attorney-G-neral's Department to enquire into matters relating to tho sugar question, including tho right to search, impoand documents, and arrest, if nocessai-y.
Replying to questions in the House, tho Hon. W. M. Hughes said th© Government was bound to ensure a supply of vital foodstuffs. It •«*_«. alleged by a big combine that there wonld bo a shortage of sugar. At tho present , j_DctuTe no question was of more vital importance, and the Government had cixercised its powers and taken steps to ___— an adequate supply.
