Sale reported:—Progress Mines, 13a 6d. AUCKLAND STOCK EXCHANGE.. (SPECIAL TO "THE PRESS.") AUCKLAND, March 5. The feature of the Exchange this week was the sudden drop in Waihi shares. Yesterflay, beforo the shilling dividend was paid, Waihi sellers ruled at from 51s to 525, but at the noon call yesterday a few lots sold .at 495, and at tho last call 4Ss 3d was accepted, while to-day threepence more was offered. The weakness of the market was shown by tho fact that only a fow hundred shares changed hands. Waihi Grand Junctions were a littic easier, being sold at 25. 9d, although the return this month was a most satisfactory one. Talisman shares on the other hand are now nearly as high as they wero before the dividend of ls 9d per share was paid. At Thames the Saxon mine has cut tho Cardigan reef at tho No. 7 level, but although colours of gold were reported, the price, which readied ll.d, dropped a penny yesterday, and another penny to-day. Work at the 1000 feet crosscut has not yet been resumed, consequently all mining shares in Thames companies are neglected. The Waiotahi Company is steadily deepening the shaft to meet. the rise from the crosscut at 1000 feet. Once this connexion is effected it will be a. great advantage in the matter of providing ample ventilation, and also in affording, an extra means of exit from the low level in case of accident to the big pump. Victorias have had a few sales but are now back to about the old level. Everything now depends upon developments in the low.level in the various companies that contributed towards the cost of the crosscut at 1000 feet Unless something is found as the result of the expenditure entailed, mining at Thames will not have fc bright outlook. Coromandel shares ate almost entirely neglected, but there were offers for Old Haurakis and Mt. Welcomes at Id. These were not, however, accepted. Rose Goldfields shares had little attention on tho Exchange this week, and the selling price dropped to 3s 7d; with no buyers above 3s 3d.

Generally speaking investment stocks have maintained their prices. Bank of Now Zealands nre, however, now offered at 241s 6d. as against 244s a week ago, and New Zealand Insurance shares changed hands at 1153, and are si ill in request nt 114s 6d. New Zealand and River Plates had a steady demand, but no sales at 42s 6d. Coal shares are unchanged, but several sales were, reported of Auckland Gas paid up shares at 27s 9d. Northern Steam, paid issue, sold at 14s sd, and more are wanted at 14s 3d. Buyers of kauri timber paid shares advanced their offers to 38s, but no selVrs quoted. For tho contributing issue 17s 6d is steadily offered. New Zealand rement .hares dropped to sellers at 8s 6d, and buyers then came in ft 7? 6d. <I_iqui*T was made for Palmerrton North Qas at £0 10s, but no soiling price was quoted.
