ASHBURTON.

At a meeting of tho Vestry of the Ashburton St. Stephen's Anglican Church, held on Wednesday evening, ont of twelve applications Mr F. H. Morton, at present organist and choirmaster of the Tokomairiro Presbyterian Church, Milton, was appointed organist for the new pipe orcan shortly to X- erected in the church. Th© neworgan will cost £750. and the contractors expect to complete the erection by tho end of May. The Mayor "of Ashburton (Mr H. Davis) has received word from Captain Eastwood, aide-de-camp to his Exeel•;ncy the Governor, stating that the Earl of Liverpool will be accompanied by the Countess on tho occasion of his visit to Ashburton and Longbeach on March llth. The Viceregal party will arrive in Ashburton at about 3.30 p.m.. and will be met at the Jubilee Gates of the Domain and conducted to the place where the official function will be held. A committee is at present arranging for tho entertainment of tho visitors. The threo companies of Ashburton Senior Cadets aro training assiduously in view of the inspection to be carried out by General Sir lan Hamilton at Timaru. As an incentive to improve their shooting, prizes for competitions have been given. Tho Rev. H. B. Hughes, M.A. (the newly-appointed pastor of the Ashburton Baptist Church) and Mrs Hughes arrived in Ashburton by the first express from tho South yesterday. Mr Hughes commences his ministry in Ashburton on Sunday next. Several of the farm lnds who arrived at Auckland from England by the. steamer Suffolk on Monday last, passed through Ashburton by the HrS*"- express yesterday for the South, in charge of Sergeant Thomson, of the 4th Hussars. Two of tho lads alighted at Ashburton, and wero taken out to Mr John Grigg's estate, Longbeach, whero they have been delegated.
