TEMUKA

At yesterday's meeting of the Temuka Road Board, Mr Tripp (representing the Mt. Peel Road Board), and Mr Scott Thomson (the Geraldine Road Board), waited on the Board and put forward the views in favour of an amalgamation of the three bodies into ono County. AVith tho exception of Mr John Talbot, the members of the Temuka Board favoured tho amalgamation, but held strongly to the opinion that the central office of the County should be situated in Temuka, the chief reason being economy in the matter of carting and administration from Temuka. The delegates confessed that the reason for the desire to retain tho office in Geraldine was based largely upon sentiment and the habit of jnany years. Eventually the Temuka Board decided to thresh tho matter out at next meeting, and then to appoint two representatives to confer with a representative from each of tho other bodies interested. To carry the proposition there must be a majority of tho ratepayers behind, it represnting a majority of tho rateable value in tho district. The monthly meeting of the Temuka Road Board was held yesterday. Present—Messrs John Talbot (chairman), G. W. Armitage. J. J. Ellis, G. McTullough, and D. Grant. A legal opinion was received through the Official Assignee, Christchurch, in the Hobson bequest, explaining i}iat it was the Trustee's duty to hold the rents and to deal with them in accordance with tha wishes of the local bodies affected, and as he (the Trustee) thought proper. Tlio opinion did not hold with the Board's contention that the particular rentals from properties within the Board's district should accrue to the Board, instead of an equal division of the whole rentals between the Temuka and Geraldine Boards. The Board resolved to make grants of £25 for improvements at the Milford Lagoon Recreation Reserve, £25 for re-building Waitohi library, £30 enlarging Winchester library book-room, and £10 completion of Rangitata library. Messrs J. Bambridge and J. W. 3oypt were reappointed tho Board's representatives on the Technical Classes Board of Managers. The Maori reception to the Australian cricketers in the Arowhenua Pa on Wednesday evening yras a splendid sue-

cess, and was greatly enjoyed by the visitors. Dancing was kept up until a late hour, and the hakas, pow_iri. poi dancing, supper, etc., were appreciated. Mr Layer returned thanks on behalf of the Australians.
