TIMARU, May G. Regarding the Smithfleld butchers' strike the only definite news is that more men have been taken on, and there were forty on the board to-day. All other men were in their places. The trouKo has spread to the Pareora works, where the unionist butchers knocked off this afternoon, five men staying on. ; ■ The s.s. Zoalandic, which had lain in the roadstead for some days owimg to bad. weather, came in this morningto load meat and other produce. The wat\.-:ido workers declined to turn to. It is understood they will hold a meeting to-morrow morning to decide whether to work her or not. .

Aftor hearing from the secretary, who went North with Mr P. C. Webb to-day, the striking butchers and waterside workers invited the managers of the freezing works and the shipping companies to a conference this morning, but the managers declined. The Smithfield manager said the time for a conference had gono by, and the shipping men that they had nothing to confer about. They, did not want to be dragged into other disputes. Both the freezing companies say tih'ey will not take on again any of tjho butchers who have gone out, and will have no moro to do with thorn.

As regards loading the Zoalandic, exporters say they wil find men if tho waterside men refuse the work, and if they try to block the boat nt other porta they will find men for these also.
