AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION

The committee of tho. Canterbury Automobile Association met last night, whon there were present:—Dr. Louisson (in the chair), Dr. Simpson, and Messrs F. W. Johnston, D. Crozicr, R. English, J. Hawkes, and A. S. Clarkson. Tho following new members were elected:—Mrs Cordy, Dr. J. Guthrie, and Messrs W. Hall and N. R. Bain.

Mr H. G. Ell, on behalf of tho Summit Road Association, wroto asking for a donation. It was resolved to make a grant of £5 ss.

A letter was received from the General Manager of Tram v.xys regarding a complaint that metal was allowed to lie by _ the roadside for lengthy periode while tramway repair work was in progress. The writer stated.that the practice adopted by the Board was that in common use by other local authorities who had to maintain roads, and that in addition it did a larger proportion of tarred macadam now than formerly, and was considering a more extensive use of tarred macadam in tho future. In some cases tho work got a little ahead of the road-roller, but tho Board could not see its way to purchase an additional roller at present. Tho engineer stated that it was not tho practice to spread the metal all over the road instead of in the prescribed area, as tho Association's letter seemed to suggest.

A letter was received trom the Town Clerk of Lyttelton regarding the improving of the zig-zag road between Lyttelton and Sumner, and suggesting two schemes, one to improve the turntables of the present road, which would cost £400. and the other to divert and lengthen tho road by eleven chains, so that a good grade could bo obtained, with only one turn to tho top of the Pass, which would cost £2500.

Mr Hawkes said the new road would bo of great value to the Government for Defence purposes, and a substantial subsidy should be forthcoming.

It was decided to make a grant or £150 towards the larger scheme, the amount to bo spread over three years. Messrs Hawkes. James, Crozier, Alarten, and Johnston were appointed the Association's representatives to confer with the Lyttelton Borough Council on the matter.

Accounts amounting to £44 11s o<l were passed for payment.

It was resolved to make a protest to the Ashburton County Council regarding the speed regulations in connection with tho Ashburton bridge, it being alleged that motor-cars were being unfairly treated in the matter.
