HASTINGS, January 1. i The H*wke's Bay Jockey Club was favoured

with perfect weather for the opening day of tho Summer Meeting. The attendance was well up to previous records, ».nd speculation . was brisk, the machine handling £14,087. as ; compared with £12,646 for ti.o first day at ! the last Summer Meeting. Results:— ! MAIDEN HACK RACE, of 70 soys; five . furlongs and a-half—l Formality, Sal slb. 1; 2. Koonya, Sst Sib. 2: 7. The Great Mogul, Sst 51b, 3. 6 Kinibombi Bst Blb, 8 Adriatic Sat 61b, 5 Discussion Bst 6lb, 10 Tehuhu Sst 51b, 3 Prestwick Bst 51b, 9 Rangipoa Bst 51b. and 4 Fair Rosamond Bst 51b also started. Formality was the first to move, followed closely by Koonya and Tho Great Mogul, and the rest strung out. The Great Mogul replaced Koonya at the railway bend, but could not overtake Formality, who won by two lensrths, Koonya put in a challenge, and beat Tho Great Mogul by a nose for second place. Fair Ko?amond teas fourth. Time, lmin lOsec. CHRISTMAS HANDICAP, of 100 soys; six furlongs—l, Eocene, 7si 2lb, I; 6, Winning Post, 7st "lb 2; 2.
