KAIAPOI.
Tli© Kaiapoi bridge, dosed for repairs since August 23rd. was definitely reopened yesterday, when Mr Young, an officer of the Public Works Itepartment, inspected the work done. This had involved the stripping of the planking forming tho road-way, which had been down twelve years, and the renewal of the timber bearers which had seen service since the erection of tho bridge, twenty-seven years ago. The grade over the centre of the bridge has been lowered eight inches, and made easier for traction, but the additional thickness in the timbers raises the approaches from the o]d roadway eight inches. Here a quantity of shingle and clay has been used, which will take some time to set, and makes it at present difficult for vehicular traffic. The amount of Mr A. Pearce's contract wae £1151. and the work is finished in a thoroughly substantial way nearly a fortnight under the six weeks allowed. It remains now for , the Borough Council to have the handrails, etc., painted, and the structure will be restored as an ornament to the borough.
