RETURNING DELEGATES.

(Received December 7th, 10.50 p.m.) CAPETOWN, December 7. There was a large attendance of influential members at the Chamber of Commerce farewell banquet to Mr Fisher and Mr Fowlds.

Mr Fisher, responding to the toast of his health, dwelt on the urgency of Australian defence, and paid a tribute to the South African's earnestness of desire to make the Union successful.

Mr Fowlds suggested the possibility of a great southern confederation, with a single naval plan.

(Received December Bth, 12.25 a.m.) CAPETOWN, December 7. Mr V. Burton, Minister of Native Affairs, said that if the Empire could be knitted by artificial bonds it would be through an interchange of visits. . The keynote of the speeches was closer union through freedom. When passing Capetown the Duke of Connaught sent a wireless message of Christmas greetings to the citizens.
