In the House of Commons Mr Gilbert, who recently defeated a Lauricr' candidate in the, Quebec Province, explained the French-Canadian attitude towards the naval question. Ho aeflared that a plebiscite ought to t>o taken on the Government's navy policy. French-Canadians wished to preserve their country's autonomy »m----affected, so that the fullest benefit would result from public expenditure. Other members criticised the existing cruisers, and declared that they wore useless for warfare. The home-built cruisers would not be better. Amendments disapproving of the Government policy and demanding a plebiscite were defeated by a majority of fifty.
