CAPTAIN COOK MEMORIAL.

: ft MEETING OF LOCAL COMMITTEE. A meeting of the local committee that is assisting the project to establish a memorial to Captain Cook was held yesterday afternoon in the City Council Chambers. The Mayor (Mr C. Allison) presided. A circular from the Picton and Sounds Promotion- Society stated that for some time a movement had been on' foot in that neighbourhood for the provision of adequate means of commemorating the work of Captain Cook. The form of the memorial had yet to be decided on, but it was agreed that Queen Charlotte Sound, Cook's well-known rendezvous, should bo the site Mrß.McNab, author of "Murihiku," had promised to deliver v scries of lectures throughout New Zealand in aid of the fund on his return from England. According to the proposed itinerary for Mr McXab's lectures lie will start at lnveroargill on July Ist and work northwards, finishing at Blenheim on July 20th. The suggested date for Christchurch is July 6th. •' Dr. Ilight said the establishment of a memorial to Captain Cook was a national question, and therefore he assumed there was no doubt as to Christchurch assisting. He moved that the meeting pledged itself to accede to the request for help contained in the circular. The motion was seconded by Mr Atkinson and agreed to|. I>r. Hight, Messrs Druramond, Atkinson and C. R. Hart were appointed a sub-committee to make arrangements for the holding of Mr McXab's lecture in Christchurch.
