AUCKLAND. May 21. Mr Stevenson, F.R.A.S., reports both on Friday and this morning he saw thovtail of Halley's comet stretchini* across the- heavens from near the horizon to nearly the zenith in the eastern ■ sky. The tail was mu-Ji fainter than tho milky way. Another bror.d bsnd of light, and what looked like another and broader tail, stretched upward.:; in wedgo shape from towards the horizon, and between it and thb original tail a darker portion of the sky intervened. NAPIER. May 21. The .sun was photographed by the Marist Fathers at Meanoe Observatory at internals of five minutes throughout the transit of Halley's comot. _ The image of the sun was oV inches in diameter, yet a very careful and prolonged examination of the negative- revealed at the best only extremely doubtful indications of thecomet's nucleus. Small sun. spots, that were invisible in tho guide telescope, showed iilainly in the photograph.
