LINWOOD v. CHRISTCHURCH.
These teams met on the south ground, and a rather ragged display of football resulted in a win for Linwocd by 6 points to nil, though had Christchurch mado the most of their chances the result would have been different. The winners played a man short.
Linwood kicked off from the east end. and the early play took place in the Christchureh twenty-five. Cotton got his side out of trouble with somo capital footwork, and the Christchureh backs set up an attack, but faulty passing spoilt the work. Good dribbling by Evans enabled Linwood to clear their line, but not for long, a strong kick by McDonald compelling the Greens to force. Each side attacked in turn, Linwood having a very narrow escape in consequence of good work by Cotton and Morrison. Fast following up by Ormandy had Morrison and Button in trouble; the Linwood fiveeighth secured the ball and pas-sod to Fitzgerald, who was tackled on the line, but succeeded in grounding the ball-. Egan failed to convr-rt the try. Christchureh rallied, and only fumbling of the passes kept them from scoring. Half-time was called with piny still in the Linwood twenty-five. The second spell opened with a strong attack by Christchurch, . and Walter almost scored, being held upright on the line. Good kicking relieved Linwood, and from a scrum in the Christchureh twenty-five Wilson set his backs in motion, and Loader scored an easy try. Thomas missed the kick at goal. In the closing stages of the game Green and Humphries headed the best rush of the day, taking the ball from one end of the field to the other. Just in the nick of time Alexander intercepted a pass, and the danger was averted. When the game ended Christchurch were still attacking, but without result, and the score was:—Linwood 6 points (two tries), Christchureh nil. Mr H. F. Garrard was referee.
