In an .interview regarding som© remarks made at tho conference of the , National Defence League, Colonel Wolfe, Officer Commanding the Auckland District,, eaid that it was ridie-ulous to say that any force could oaeil.y land or establish it-r.-etf. cr rr.ytfcirg cf tLe Ikiiaid. tt would only bo in tho way of a mere raid whilo tbe British Nevy held the sea, that tbe Australian fleet would have to be dealt with. The Auckland defences had boon much improved, and improvements even now were being effected. Several additional guns wore to be placed for Auckland's defence,, and though tho present lights .were quite good, others were to be provided so as'to-render it possible to keep a vessel under observation during the firing, and for tactical purposes. Apart from t-lio armament, tho forts were in a very good condition. These improvements would make Auckland's defence efficient against a fairly strong squadron. Colonel Tn&on, Officer Commanding the New South Wales Force, bod remarked to Colonol Wolfe that ho, thought it almost impcssible that an on-amy could get into Auckland without observation.
