THE NEWCASTLE STRIKE
NINE MINES IDLE.

Altogether, nine mines have been rendered idle at Newcastle, including Lambton, Burwood, West Walbend, and Northern Extended. Tho Premier telegraphed the President of the Miners' Federation, urging a, resumption of work, and pointing out that he could not emphasise too strongly the gravity of the situation. Tho wharf labourers' strike at Newcastle continues. The strikers demand an increase to Is 3d per- hour for the day, and 16 9d per hour for night work. Crews from the boats aro assisting the permanent wharf hands, and they aro slowly discharging vessels arriving. The Union Company paid nonunionists, discharging the Wakatipu, tho rates demanded by tho strikers. (Received January Cth, 1 a.m.) SYDNEY, January 5. There is no change in tho position at the collieries. To-morrow's conference is anxiously awaited.
