ASHBURTON BAND CONTEST.
The Ashburton Band Contest was brought to a conclusion yesterda-y morning, when the final solo competition was played off. The result was:— E FLAT HORN - SOLO. Iα Wendelburn (Lyttelton Marine), 49 points .. .. .. .. 1 C. Cook (Elite), 47 points .. ..2 it. Tucker (Ashburton Teniper&noe), 4to ix>ints ~ .. .. ..3
The other scores were:—T. Curran (Kelson Citizens), Mid W. Holand (Elite), 43 point* Ofvch; J. Slorrior (Invercarßill V.11.0.A.), 44; F. Bath (Invercargill V.M.C.A.), 41.
J. A. Jackson (Nelson Citizens), the Inst player, brought tho contest to a sudden, termination by accidentally dropping his music shortly after ho had commenced pl.aj'ing.
Lieut-en ant T. Herd, the judge, stated that he considered tho E flat horm solo playing a very fine performance all through, and equal to the best that would be heard from first-class bandsmen. Howas specially complimentary in respect to the playing of L. Wcndelburn (Lyttelton Marine), remarking that his was the most artistically playod selection he had ever heard in New Zealand.
The bandsmen hnve tendered to Mrs Lill, for the W.C.T.U., n token of their appreciation of tho hoepitality extended to them by the union during tho contest.
