THOUSANDS OF FUGITIVES.
(Received April 12th, 12.22 a.m.) Rome, April 11. King Edward has sent a message to King Emm—uuel expressing bis deep sympathy. A total of five hundred persons perished at Ottaiano and San Guieeeppe. The volcano is now active in the direction of Cercolai. A shower of sulphur fell at San Guieseppe, Vesuviani, and Ottaiano, and a shower of reddish sand fell for several hours at Naples in the evening. Tbe ashes fell thickest.at Torre Delereeda and Torre Annunsiata. Both are isolated. Numbers, including British and German journalists, are unable to leave. A. French squadron has been sent to Naples to assist in the re6oue of the sufforer% Tbe fugitives number twelve thousand. '
