Mr Lsard, who appeared for tho accused, stated that ho would apply for probation. Restitution had been made, and the Probation Officer's report was favourable. The accused had jiust como out to tha colony. ,Tho Magistrate: What have you eppnt tho money on? Accused: Betting on the course and in town. What wages were you getting?— Thirty (shillings weekly. And only yourself to keep?— Yes. His Worship stated that he thought tho cote was one for probation. "I can only tell you," he added, addrossing the accused, "as I have told many otheivs, that you will get one chance, and no more, and if- you come up again charged with a similar offence, I will send you to gaol without a moment's hesitation. Betting and gambling is a sort of game which benefits nolmdy; thero is nothing in it. Ido not suppose for a moment that you will take advice, but you cannot possibly gain anything by betting and gambling in the long run. The temptation to ep?nd your own money is but when yours is gone tho temptation ,, to steal: somebody else's is still greater." The magistrate then admitted tho accused, to three months' probation.
