THE CHRISTCHURCH TELEPHONES.

tO THE EDITOR OF THB PRESS. j Sir, —I read an article in your journal of this morning, giving the experience 'of several business men in connection with j tlie telephone system, and reflecting strongly on the operators. Now I do not for one moment presume to say those gentlemen gave anything but their true experience, but con only say that I have every belief that there is much to be said in extenuation. I have several times had occasion for complaint, and have thought mys-elf a very much injured individual, but when the various causes of delay have been fully enquired into, I have invariably had to confess tliat I waa sorry I had made such complaint. The life of a telephone operator is not a highly desirable one, and has little to commend it. Apart from petty delays, which are a part and parcel of every system, I can -only speak in terms of the highest praise of the courtesy and attention of all the operators with whom I have been brought into contact, aud am convinced from experience that tlie system here will compare most favourably with that of Sydney -and Melbourne, or indeed any of the Australian cities.—Yours, etc., L. GRANT. 176 Hereford street.
