Derby day was uulortunateiy marred by ft demonstration against the principal racing stable, -nhich wa.3 a derate to '.ruse v;ho were responsible for it. Alter F.J.A. -.urn the Derby in such splendid frtyie that thj victory bhoulci have commended itscli to everyone v.-ith an atom of sport in ins composition, the crowd on tne flat hooted and groaned as the gallant pony returned to the weighing enciobure, and tho hoodlums on the hill taking it up. a scene of indescribable uproar w;i3 as3o.cia.wd with the event until ivady Tounysou had invested l-'.J.A. with the handsome blue garland emblematic ot victory, and the hero of tho day was led away. Il is quite certain, however, rhat no hostile display was less justified. The three horses (F.J.A., Sweet. Xeii, and Brnir), which are in tin same stable, laced independently of each other, and there is unlimited proof, so far R. 3 the stoble itseM is concerned financially, that the worSt of the three won. On the day Sweet Neil was tho cho.ee oi the stable, for Emir had begun to fade, and F.J .A. w&i not regarded as so genuine a stayer us the filly. Yet, because the three were lot go on their merits, the winner's owner met with an experience that every true sportsman must be ashamed to ren.-em.ber. Ui:ce in line for home the contest resolved itself into a duel between Sir Rupert Clarke's pair, ior Belah was already showing of distress, and Emir was hopelessly beaten. Though Sweet Nell made a gurne effort to catch her stable mate, she failed signally. For a pony the is said to stand not. more than 14.2) F.J.A. put up a remarkable perf( nuance, and though Derbies have been won before from end to "end. F.J.A.'s is by far the best of all similar performances. MELBOURNE NOTES. MELBOURNE, November 2. Rain fell during the night and consequently the tracks were heavy this morning. Sojourner, with a light weight in the saddle, covered a mile in lmin -iajsec. the last five furlongs being compassed in lmin CJsec. He finished well. Flagship did a good gallop over six furlongs in lmin 20Jsec, and Fishery skipped over half a mile in s'2sec. Emir has been scratched for the Cup, and Hatlturier for all engagements. Wakeful pulled up apparently sound this morning, after a gallop, and will probably start. The •Idler, who too was regarded as an unlikely starter, is recovering from his reported wrench, and may also start. V.R.C. SPRING -MEETING. The Spring Meeting of the Victoria Racing Club will advance another stage to-dov, when tho Melbourne Cup will be decided. F.J.A.'s mieritorious win in the Derby makes his prospects of carrying off the big two mile event look bright, while another three-year-old in Lord Cardigan is sure to run prominently. Victory may rest with one of this pair, though Postillion and Flagship should also run well.
