HANMER NOTES.

Residents and visitors had quite a pleasant surprise when they heard that the site for the new tea rooms at the Spa had been altered to a more suitable spot. They will not now take up the best part of the ground. Drs. Mason and Finch have been here seeing into the water supply, which I believe is not too good. I understand members of the Advancement Committee escorted them up the Rogerson river, from which a plentiful supply of water could be obtained at little cost, and as Dr Mason has, I believe, formed a very favourable opinion of it, we entertain great hopes of getting assistance at last. The local doctor from Culverden seems to be kept very busy, but for all that lie does not neglect Hanmer. He is generally about when urgently needed. A few nights ago a visitor at the Spa took suddenly ill, but Mr Gould, the manager, being ever on the alert, had the doctor in a very few minutes.

Majuba Hill, with the new track, is attracting a great number of visitors already. Tt is quite an ornament to the place. Mr Rutherford knows the requirements of the people. It is a pity the Springs "are not in the hands of an energetic individual instead of the Government, and then the place would boom. 1 think the visitors appreciate the action of Warder Roberts in removing the prisoners' workshop from the side of the main road. The prisoners are seldom seen now except at their daily work. The visitors are still keeping up to the average for the time of year, but I expect there will be a falling off on account of the counter attractions in Christchurch this month. After the races and show they generally commence to pour in, and a very busy season at Hanmer is expected. A very large progressive euchre party was given in the drawing-room of Hanmer Lodge a- few evenings a£o. Mis H. Harris, of Christt'hurch, won the first prize, and Mr Bertrum the booby prize. When lie opened his puree] he discovered it consisted of a baby"s feeding boitle.
